Do the young people have in interest in politics or what's going on in the world? Before we carried out a survey of students' concerns about the politics, we thought that the young people in Japan would be indifferent to domestic and world news, and Korean youth would have a similar tendency. However, the survey showed different results and many of the high school students of both countries had an interest in what was happening in the world. They get information mainly from TV and less than half of them try to read newspapers to keep informed. Considering the cyber environment, Korean students might often use the Internet in place of TV. The common result of this survey was that high school students of both countries don't have much interest in politics. As is often the case with Japanese high school students, the percentage of our interest is low. We don't have the right to vote for elections, and have never experienced participating in the politics, so it might be difficult for us to be familiar with political issues. This fact might be applied to the Korean students. However, we got different facts from the university students of Korea. According to Prof. Han at Cheongju University, many of the students at CU volunteered to take part in the Presidential election campaign last year, trying to make their youth voice be reflected in the government. This might be totally different from current university students in Japan. As for the major problems or concerns, we got interesting results. Both students put the problems into similar order, which means they are concerned about the mostly common problems in Korea and Japan. Although the percentage of "yes" was low on question No. 4, the high school students of South Korea were remarkably interested in other problems as we can see from the result of question No. 6. We think Korean students are concerned about various matters and this would lead them to be more critical after graduating high school. On the other hand, Japanese students were interested in war and conflicts or world peace. We believe Korean students and Japanese students have various other opinions that should be shared with each other and we are sure to be able to conduct meaningful exchanges on common local issues as well as global issues. by Eri Kitazawa |
