| The Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters of World War II |

At the end of World War II, the Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters were constructed as the underground military base in Zenkoji Plateau. It was located in the middle of three mountains in Matsushiro-town; Zouzan, Maizuru, and Minakami. Even when Japan was very likely to lose the war, military authorities from the allied forces carried out war in Japan, and Japan decided to fight its last battle against these countries inside Japan. Then the Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters was planned to be built because the military authorities thought they could command the soldiers fighting the decisive battle to save Japan. The imperial family, some government officials and national radio stations were going to be moved to the Matsushiro Imperial Headquarters. Not only young Japanese but also lots of Korean workers were brought over to Matsushiro for this construction, and they were forced to work very hard. Many of them were killed by this work because of the cave-ins or accidents cased by the failure of the blast, but we donft known clearly about the number of the victims and who they were even now. We cannot but feel deep remorse for what the military caused during the World War II and at the same time feel the sense of mission for keeping the world peace forever. @ |
